A.  Background and Rationale

The Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) has developed the Career Insights Programme (CIP) as a national career awareness and industry engagement initiative aimed at supporting students from Grades 8 to 13 in making informed educational, training and career choices.

Mauritius continues to evolve into a service-oriented and knowledge-based economy, where sustainable growth depends on a workforce equipped with relevant skills, competencies and qualifications. In this context, it is essential to provide young people with structured, timely and relevant career information, combined with meaningful exposure to work environments and industry perspectives.

Choosing a career remains a complex and often challenging process for many students, particularly in a rapidly changing labour market where occupations, skills requirements and study pathways are continuously evolving. The programme contributes to this need for career insights by presenting career learning experiences that support informed decision-making at critical stages of education.

B.  Objectives of the Career Insights Programme

The Career Insights Programme aims to:

·      Provide students with career information and support career exploration;

·      Introduce learners to career planning and career management concepts;

·      Provide insights on current and emerging skills needs and occupations; and

·      Allow industry professionals to share real-life experiences, career pathways and workplace expectations.

Through these interventions, the CIP supports students with career insights and assist them in their career exploration.

C.  Programme Approach and Delivery

The Career Insights Programme adopts an interactive approach to career development, bringing together students and industry professionals in a shared learning environment.

Students are exposed to real-life insights from industry practitioners who share their career journeys, workplace experiences, sector developments, skills requirements and emerging opportunities across various fields. This direct engagement helps students better understand the realities of the labour market and the range of possible career pathways available to them.

D.  The Digital Career Cube

A central feature of the Career Insights Programme is the Digital Career Cube, an interactive career tool designed to present career development as a structured and continuous process. The tool is built around four key dimensions that introduces learners through different stages of career development:

(i) Self-Awareness

This dimension encourages students to reflect on their personal attributes, including their goals and ambitions, values and principles, interests and passions, personality traits, preferred work environments, skills and competencies, as well as lifestyle and financial expectations.

(ii) Career Planning

This component introduces the career planning cycle, including self-assessment, career exploration, decision-making, action planning and evaluation, enabling students to understand how career decisions are developed and refined over time.

 (iii) Career Guidance

This dimension introduces learners in exploring the labour market, identifying occupations in demand, reviewing job descriptions, considering local and international study opportunities, understanding emerging trends, and receiving guidance from experienced professionals.

(iv) Career Management

This component highlights on employability and career development skills, including CV preparation, interview skills, workplace ethics, continuous learning, career progression strategies and long-term career planning.

The Digital Career Cube is delivered through a user-friendly web-based platform that allows students to interact with each dimension in a visual, engaging and intuitive manner. It also includes simplified explanations, practical examples, prompts and quiz-based elements to enhance understanding and participation.

The digital format ensures accessibility and continuity of learning, enabling students to use the tool at any stage of their educational or career journey.

E.  Expected Outcomes

The Career Insights Programme is expected to:

·      Improve students’ awareness of labour market trends and emerging careers;

·      Contribute to informing educational and career choices;

·      Strengthen linkages between industry and the education system; and

·      Provide information that could inform career planning and management skills among students.

The Career Insights Programme reflects the HRDC’s ongoing commitment to bridging the gap between education and industry. Through structured career learning, exposure to labour market information and engagement with industry professionals, the programme aims to empower young people with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to navigate their future career pathways.
